THE ANIMAL IMPORTATION AND QUARANTINE (AMENDMENT) ACT
No. 45 OF 1989

An Act to amend the Animal Importation and Quarantine Act No. 7 of 1988

BE IT ENACTED by the President and Parliament as follows:-

AMENDMENT OF SECTION 1

1. Section 1 of the Animal Importation and Quarantine Act No. 7 of 1988 (principal Act) is amended in the definition of "biological products" by substituting for the words "promotants, antibiotics, protozoa" of the words "promotants and anitbiotics and any protozoa".

AMENDMENT OF SECTION 18

2. Section 18 of the principal Act is repealed and the following section is substituted:-

"ORDERS PROHIBITING IMPORTS

18. The Minister may, in consultation with the Principal Veterinary Officer, for the purpose of preventing the introduction of disease into Vanuatu, make orders prohibiting the landing of animals or any animal product, biological product, related article or of carcasses, fodder, litter, dung or other thing brought from any specified country outside Vanuatu or any specified part of any such country."

AMENDMENT OF SECTION 19

3. Section 19 of the principal Act is amended in paragraph (f) of subsection (1) by deleting the word "good" and substituting the word "goods".

AMENDMENT OF SECTION 20

4. Section 20 of the principal Act is amended by deleting the figure and words "100,000 vatu and imprisonment for a period not exceeding six months" and substituting the figure and words "1 million vatu and imprisonment for a period not exceeding 3 years".

AMENDMENT OF SECTION 22

5. Section 22 of the principal Act is amended in paragraph (e) by inserting after the words "quarantine area" the words "quarantine station or quarantine zone".

COMMENCEMENT

6. This Act shall come into force on the date of its publication in the Gazette.
