An Act

entitled

Defamation (Amendment) Act 2016,

Being a law to amend the Defamation Act (Chapter 293), and for related purposes,

MADE by the National Parliament to come into operation in accordance with a notice in the National Gazette by the Head of State, acting on advice.

1. DEFINITION OF DEFAMATION (AMENDMENT OF SECTION 3).

Section 3 of the Principal Act is amended -

(a) by deleting the comma after Paragraph (c) and replacing it with "; or"; and
(b) by adding after Paragraph (c) the following new paragraph and comma:

• "(d) by use of electronic systems or devices,"

2. PUBLICATION (AMENDMENT OF SECTION 4).

Section 4 of the Principal Act is amended -

(a) by deleting the comma after Paragraph (c)(iv) and replacing it with "; and"; and
(b) by adding after Paragraph (c)(iv) the following new paragraph and comma:

• "(d) any of (a), (b) or (c) generated through the use of an electronic system or device,"

3. PROTECTION: REPORTS OF MATTERS OF PUBLIC INTEREST (AMENDMENT OF SECTION 8).

Section 8 of the Principal Act is amended by adding immediately after Subsection (1) the following new subsection:

"(1A) For the purposes of this Section, "public meeting" includes online discussion forums, whether or not featured on social networking sites.".

4. REPEAL OF PART III.

Part III of the Principal Act is repealed in its entirety.
