SUPREME COURT ACT 2018

PRACTICE DIRECTION NO. 1 OF 2018

LEGAL REPRESENTATIVES COURT ATTIRE

Notified: 13^th July 2018

In accordance with section 112 of the Supreme Court Act 2018, I make this Practice Direction that the attire to be worn by legal representatives appearing before the Supreme Court shall be as follows:

1. In a civil hearing before the Supreme Court, the attire to be worn by a legal representative shall be:
   
   • (a) in the case of males:
     
     • (i) black gown;
       
     • (ii) a lounge suit of black or grey colour;
       
     • (iii) a collared shirt in plain white, blue or any other sombre colours with a tie; and
       
     • (iv) enclosed black shoes.
       
   • (b) in the case of females:
     
     • (i) black gown;
       
     • (ii) black jacket;
       
     • (iii) a black or dark navy-blue dress;
       
     • (iv) white, blue or sombre colour blouse;
       
     • (v) black or grey skirts or trousers; and
       
     • (vi) enclosed black shoes.
       
2. In a criminal trial or hearing before the Supreme Court, the attire to be worn shall be as follows:
   
   • (a) Barristers and Solicitors:
     

(i) in the case of males:

(A) black gown, wig, jabot;

(B) a lounge suit of black or grey colour;

(C) a collared shirt in plain white, blue or any other sombre colours with a tie; and

(D) enclosed black shoes.

(ii) in the case of females:

• (A) black gown, wig, jabot;
  
• (B) black jacket;
  
• (C) a black or dark navy-blue dress;
  
• (D) white, blue or sombre colour blouse;
  
• (E) black or grey skirts or trousers; and
  

(F) enclosed black shoes.

(c) Pleaders:

(i) in the case of males:

• (A) black gown and jabot;
  
• (B) a lounge suit of black or grey colour;
  
• (C) a collared shirt in plain white, blue or any other sombre colours with a tie; and
  
• (D) enclosed black shoes.
  

(i) in the case of females:

(A) black gown and jabot;

(B) black jacket;

(C) a black or dark navy-blue dress;

(D) white, blue or sombre colour blouse;

(E) black or grey skirts or trousers; and

(F) enclosed black shoes.

3. The attire to be worn by legal representatives appearing before the Supreme Court in chambers for a criminal or civil cause or matter:
   

(a) in the case of males:

(i) a lounge suit of black or grey colour;

(ii) a collared shirt in plain white, blue or any other sombre colours with a tie; and

(iii) enclosed black shoes.

(b) in the case of females:

(i) black jacket;

(ii) a black or dark navy-blue dress;

(iii) white, blue or sombre colour blouse;

(iv) black or grey skirts or trousers; and

(v) enclosed black shoes.

4. The attire to be worn by the members of the Bench shall be:
   
   • (a) for the trial or hearing of a substantive civil cause or matter, gown and tie and without wigs; or
     

(b) in a criminal hearing of a cause or matter, fully robed.

5. On formal occasions such as the opening or closing of the Legal Year, the Bench and Bar, all legal representatives shall be fully robed, as provided for the dressing requirements of the Court of Appeal.

6. The Counsel’s Dress Order 2003 contained in Gazette Notice No. 88/2003 or any other subsequent dress code is repealed and replaced by this Practice Direction.
