DECREE NO. 19

IMMIGRATION (AMENDMENT) (NO. 1) DECREE 1988

IN exercise of the powers conferred upon me by subsection (2) of section 24 of the Head of State and Executive Authority of Fiji Decree 1988, I as President and Commander-in-Chief of the Republic of Fiji hereby make the following Decree-

Short title

1. This Decree may be cited as the Immigration (Amendment) (No. 1) Decree 1988.

Interpretation

2. In this Decree the Immigration Act is referred to as “the Act”.

Section 2 amended

3. Section 2 of the Act is amended by inserting the following definition after the definition of “immigration officer”:-

“ “mass communications medium”, includes any publication, television broadcast, radio broadcast, cinematographic film, sound recording, or any audio-visual recording;”.

Section 9 amended

4. Subsection 2 of section 9 of the Act is amended by deleting the fullstop appearing after the proviso to that section and substituting a semi-colon therefor, and by inserting the following proviso after that proviso:-

“Provided further that nothing in the preceding proviso shall entitle a person to engage in any business, profession or employment in the nature of or associated with the researching, compiling, recording or reporting of any news, intelligence, occurrences, or any remarks, observations or comments, in relation to such news, intelligence, occurrences, or any other matter of public interest for dissemination by means of any mass communications medium.”.

Commencement

5. This Decree shall come into force on 2nd February 1988.
