An Act to amend the House of Arikis Act 1966

(2 December 2008

BE IT ENACTED by the Parliament of the Cook Islands in Session assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:

1. Short Title - This Act may be cited as the House of Arikis Amendment Act 2008, and shall be read together with and deemed part of the House of Arikis Act 1966 (the "principal Act").

2. Disqualification of members of the House of Arikis - Section 7(1) of the principal Act is hereby amended by inserting between paragraph (a) and (b) the following new paragraph:

"(aa) If the Ariki makes a declaration within the Cook Islands or elsewhere not recognising Her Majesty the Queen in right of New Zealand as the Head of State of the Cook Islands:

Provided that before the next session of the House the Ariki apologises to His Excellency the Queen's Representative in writing and withdraws the Ariki's support for such declaration before taking the oath of allegiance."
