An Act to amend the Decentralization Act No. 11 of 1980

BE IT ENACTED by the President and Parliament as follows:-

INSERTION OF NEW SECTION 8A

1. The Decentralization Act No. 11 of 1980 (principal Act), as amended, is further amended by the insertion after section 8 of the following section:-

"DEPOSITS BY CANDIDATES

8A. (1) Every candidate shall, not later than a date declared by the Electoral Commission by Order, deposit or cause to be deposited with the Principal Electoral Officer a sum of not more than 10,000 vatu and in default thereof the candidate shall be deemed to have withdrawn from candidature.

(2) A deposit paid under subsection (1) shall not be refunded.

(3) The Electoral Commission may by Order provide for-

(a) the amount of vatu to be deposited by every candidate; and

(b) the period within which the amount of vatu shall be deposited."

AMENDMENT OF THE SCHEDULE

2. The Schedule of the principal Act is amended in part 2 under the heading "(a) HEAD TAX" in paragraph (3) by substituting "55 years" for "60 years".

COMMENCEMENT

3. This Act shall come into force on the date of its publication in the Gazette.
