BOXING MATCHES (REGULATION) ACT

AN ACT TO REGULATE BOXING MATCHES


Commencement [15th August, 1932]


1 Short title.


This Act may be cited as The Boxing Matches (Regulation) Act.


2 Definition.


For the purposes of this Act the term "boxing match" shall mean any contest between two human beings in which the fists are used and to witness which the public are admitted for valuable consideration and includes a wrestling match.


3 Permit to be granted.


No boxing match shall take place without a permit in writing signed by a police officer not below the rank of inspector or a police officer duly authorised in writing by the Minister of Police in that behalf. (Amended by Act 5 of 1965.)


4 Conditions of permit.


Such permit shall not be given unless the premises where the match is to take place and all appliances used in connection therewith shall have been previously inspected by such police officer and found by him to be suitable having regard to the safety of the contestants and of the spectators.


5 Eligibility of referee.


Such permit shall state the name of the person who is to act as referee of such boxing match and no person shall be permitted to act as referee unless he shall have an adequate knowledge of the rules under which the boxing match is to be carried on and of the duties of a referee in such a match.


6 Medical certificate.


No person shall contest in a boxing match unless he shall within 24 hours of such match have been granted a certificate by a medical officer stating that he is medically fit to take part in such match.


7 Authority of police officer.


A police officer shall be present at every boxing match and shall have power to order the cessation of such match at any time or to give any other orders dealing with the conduct of such match.


8 Breach of Section 7.


Every person who as promoter, contestant, referee or otherwise shall be concerned in any boxing match which infringes against the provisions of this Act and who fails to obey any orders of a police officer given under section 7 shall be guilty of an offence against this Act.


9 Penalty.


Any person guilty of an offence against this Act shall be liable to a fine not exceeding $500 or in default of payment to 3 months' imprisonment. (Amended by Act 32 of 1988.)


10 Fees.


The fees set out in the Schedule shall be payable for the matters set out therein.
