Sentencing Conference, National Judicial College of Australia

This conference will build on the success of a multidisciplinary conferences on Sentencing in 2006 and 2008, each attended by over 300 participants including 70 members of the judiciary. The 2010 conference will be of interest to people with an interest in sentencing and its aftermath. This includes the judiciary, legal practitioners, health and welfare professionals involved in court proceedings, academics, media representatives , community representatives, corrective services officers and the public generally.

26 - 27 November 2009 10th "Law via the Internet" Conference

The 10th “Law via the Internet” conference, held for the very first time in its 10-years history in Africa, offers the opportunity listen to and engage with experts from around the world contributing and presenting on the cross-cutting issues of law and technology, including but not limited to issues of provision of law over the Internet. The theme of the conference will be Global Free Access to Law and Developing Countries: Impact, Challenges and Networks. The main conference themes, as per the draft programme are:

  • Free Access to Law initiatives in developing countries
  • Benefits of and challenges to the provision of Free Access to Law
  • Donors and the Free Access to Law Movement in developing countries
  • Policy and legal considerations and Free Access
  • Free and Open Source solutions and developments in Support of Free Access to Law
  • Technology in support of courts and parliaments
  • Digital Archiving in the legal domain
  • Computer Assisted Legal Research - a practical session
  • The potential for IT in further developing a global network for Free Access to Law

These topics will not only be of interest to lawyers, notaries and legal information specialists but also to specialists from courts, tribunals and ministries as well as authors and editors.

Applications invited for United Nations International Law Seminar, Geneva, 6-24 July 2009

  • Applicants should have a background in International Law at the postgraduate level.
  • Aged between 24 and 38 years old on 1st January 2009
  • Deadline for receiving candidatures is 17 April 2009

The seminar aims to enable postgraduate students or young university teachers specialized in international law, as well as young lawyers working in the international law field, to widen their knowledge of both the work of the International Law Commission and of the codification and progressive development of international law. It also provides an opportunity for lawyers coming from different legal systems and cultures to exchange view regarding items on the agenda of the Commission.

Please note that while the Seminar is free, the United Nations can make no financial contribution toward travel or residential expenses incurred by participants.
