INTERPRETATION (AMENDMENT) ACT 1996

AN ACT


To amend the Interpretation Act 1971

AN ACT


To amend the Interpretation Act 1971.


(Certified: 1st July, 1996)


Enacted by the Parliament of Nauru as follows:


SHORT TITLE


1. (1) This Act may be cited as the Interpretation (Amendment) Act 1996.


(2) The principal Act as amended by this Act may be cited as the Interpretation Act 1971-1996.


COMMENCEMENT


2. This Act shall come into force with immediate effect.


INTERPRETATION


3. In this Act the "principal Act" means the Interpretation Act 1971 as amended by the Interpretation (Amendment) Act 1975 and the Interpretation (Amendment) (No.2) Act 1975.


AMENDMENT OF SECTION 2 OF THE PRINCIPAL ACT


4. Section 2 of the principal Act is amended by adding thereto immediately after subsection (6) the following new subsection (7).


"(7) Subject to the Nauru Island Council Act 1992, a reference to the Nauru Local Government Council established under the Nauru Local Government Council Ordinance 1951-1967, the Head Chief, the Deputy Head Chief, a Councillor of the Nauru Local Government Council in any written law, including the principal Act, means a reference to the Republic, the Cabinet, the Chairman of the Cabinet, or a Cabinet Minister as the case may be."
