Enacted by the Parliament of Nauru as follows:

1 Short title

This Act may be cited as the Births, Deaths and Marriages (Amendment) Act 2016.

2 Commencement

This Act commences on the date it is certified by the Speaker.

3 Amendment of Births, Deaths and Marriages Act 1957

The Births, Deaths and Marriages Act is amended by the provisions of this Act.

4 Insert new section 27A

27A Prohibited marriages
No marriage shall be solemnised between persons of the same gender.
